Why do prices for web addresses fluctuate so much?

I was looking at a few names for my blog, and I am confused why some are ten dollars while others are thousands. Then I see some that are cheap for the first year but double in price when it comes time to renew. It feels like a bit of a trap for people who aren't tech-savvy. How am I supposed to budget for my website if the costs aren't consistent? Is there a way to find a flat rate or at least understand what a fair market value is?

The price differences usually come down to whether a name is considered "premium" or if it is a standard registration. Checking the latest domain pricing will give you a better idea of what the baseline costs are for various extensions like .com or .net. Always look at the renewal rate before you buy, as that is where many people get surprised later on. You should compare a few different registrars to see which one offers the best long-term value for your budget.
